More than Keeping You Awake

Living in a busy society, coffee and tea have become an essential part of our life, keeping us alert throughout the day. Although we are aware that coffee and tea contain caffeine, we seem to be unaware of the benefits of drinking coffee and tea every day. In many research studies, coffee and tea have been proven to bring beneficial effects to people who drink these beverages daily. Would you be happier to know that coffee and tea not only boost your alertness but also contribute to a healthier body?

Not only did coffee and tea consumption correlate to a lower risk of death in patients with diabetes, but it also reduced the rate of stroke and dementia for ordinary people.

First of all, according to a study conducted by the Fukuoka Diabetes Registry, coffee and tea consumption was associated with a 63% lower risk of death among diabetes patients. The study focused on tracking the health of Japanese people with type 2 diabetes, who are especially prone to circulatory diseases and dementia, which are symptoms associated with a decline in brain function. Of the participants who were in the study, those who drank 2-3 cups of either coffee or tea per day showed a 63% lower rate of death than those who drank 0-1 cup daily (BMJ).

Not only did coffee and tea consumption correlate to a lower risk of death in patients with diabetes, but it also reduced the rate of stroke and dementia for ordinary people. Dementia and strokes are serious health issues today that cause numerous deaths. According to a study conducted by the Tianjin Medical University, people who drank approximately 4-6 cups of coffee and tea had significantly lower rates of developing a stroke or dementia compared to those who didn’t drink coffee or tea. Moreover, drinking coffee was associated with a lower risk of post-stroke dementia (PLOS).

Although these studies are small associations of coffee and tea intake on our body’s health, they reflect the idea that these beverages can have a positive effect beyond keeping us awake in school or at work. As people increasingly drink more and more coffee and tea throughout the day, it may seem that excessive caffeine consumption may have a negative effect on our health. However, for those who worry about related health issues, it is good news that there are more studies conducted today that shed light on the positive effects of coffee and tea consumption. As with the increasing popularity of coffee and tea around the world today, it has become more important than ever to analyze the effects of coffee and tea consumption on our body’s health.
